Information about Septic Systems

Aitkin County requires permits for the construction, installation, modification, operation, and replacement of subsurface sewage treatment systems (SSTS). Aitkin County does not administer regulations on wastewater operations located within incorporated municipalities.

Aitkin County regulates septic systems through the Aitkin County Subsurface Sewage Treatment System Ordinance, along with adhering to the regulations established through Minnesota Statutes and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. These rules and regulations have been established to protect surface water and groundwater from contamination, and to protect the public’s health and safety.

Aitkin County requires a compliance inspection be performed on the septic system for the following reasons;

• Prior to the sale or transfer of property.
• Prior to the issuance of a permit to add a bedroom or residence addition to the structure, or expansion that may impact the system performance.
• For all new construction in the Shoreland District, excluding decks, patios, and accessory buildings less than 240 square feet in size.

If a septic system is found to be noncompliant, or failing, the septic system shall be upgraded, replaced, or repaired within one (1) year. If the septic system is deemed an Imminent Threat to Public Health or Safety, it must be abated within ten (10) days. The septic system shall then be upgraded, replaced, or repaired within ten (10) months.
